Athlete Attire

Athletic Attire must adhere to the FCPS Dress Code Policy

Practices - 

  • Appropriate T-shirts / Sweatshirts
  • Appropriate Shorts / Sweatpants
  • Athletic Footwear/Running Shoes (No Spikes)

NOTE: No student athlete will be allowed to be shirtless or wear mid-drift tops or sport undergarments ONLY (i.e. sports bra or tank tops) during practice

Meets - 

  • Uniform top provided
  • Black, Blue or Grey bottoms
  • Athletic Footwear/Running Shoes (Spikes Not Required)

Student Athlete Self-Care

Becoming a student-athlete provides an excellent chance to develop essential skills and habits that can help young individuals become more prepared and responsible as they progress in life. We encourage students to do the following:

  • Hydrate
  • Stretch
  • Cardio workout on your own 1-2 days a week. 
  • Time management
  • Access Village support (parents, family members, counselors, trusted adult, coaches, etc)
  • Appropriate nutrition
  • Sleep

Meets

  • There are four schedule competitions 
  • Athletes will be competing in 1600m, 800m, 400m, 200m & 100m races. Field events are shot put & long jump
  • Sandburg Athletics Leadership will provide meet transportation details.  
  • Athletics Staff will be responsible for communicating all competition details to the team. 
  • SAAP has contracted a timing company to assist w/ meet management
  • Certified Athletic Trainers will be onsite for meets
  • Meet Format
    • Race 1 - 7:30am arrival, 8:00am start with 1:00pm finish
    • Anticipate several heats (Boys/Girls) each race
    • Anticipate departure time to return to Sandburg to be 5-6 hours after arrival
  • Parents/Guardians of Sandburg Panther Student Athletes who wish to have their student released directly from the event into parent/guardian care must complete the CSMS Athletics Sport Event Student Early Release Form 23-24 at least 24 hours before the Meet event. Submit one form per event per student. Following this procedure will help with team management and the safety of all student athletes.

    Please note:

    • While emails are welcome, this form is the required method of communication to pick up your child from the meet in lieu of county provided bus transportation back to Sandburg. 
    • Students may only be released to their respective “on file” guardian / parents.
    • No “buddy/neighbor” releases permitted.
    • Parent must complete this form and physically sign out their student athlete on the Sandburg Team Clipboard. 
    • Please be prepared to show a government issued ID when signing out.

Coach's Student Expectations

  1. Be a Panther in Pursuit! In school & during practices and meets
  2. Always have water at practices
  3. Show up to train, not overtrain, not to lounge
  4. Wear appropriate clothes and running shoes
  5. Form bonds with teammates and help others succeed
  6. Attend practices weekly 
  7. Be on time to class
  8. Be respectful to staff and peers
  9. Have no failing grades

FAQ

How will my student let the coaches know they will be at practice? 

Students must sign in at lunch each day of practice to confirm attendance.

Where do students go for practice?

When the dismissal bell rings, on practice days, students should report to the cafeteria by 2:25p to meet Coaches.

Where will my student go to get the late bus?

Students who are riding the late buses home will report to cafeteria at 4:30p

What door should I pick up my student from practice?

Students who are walkers or have parent transportation will exit the building out of Door #1 at 4:30p

Who else will might coach my student?

West Potomac High School Track and Field Coaches will be at few practices for training sessions

Are there any discounts on Athletic Footwear?

Road Runner Sports in Arlington extending a 10% off discount until Sunday March 17, 2024. *Just mention Sandburg Track and Field.
Our program also gets 10% of the proceeds from sales. Other stores include; Pacer Running Store (Old Town) and Potomac River Running Store (Springfield)

Can I take my student athlete home after the event?
