What is the After-School Program?

A Fairfax County Public School program designed to give added support, both academic and non-academic, to students to foster better success in and out of the classroom…designed to provide a ‘safe haven’ for kids to go to after school…an added resource for parents to utilize to help their children become better, more-involved members of their school and their community…most important -- FUN!!!!!

What time does After School Begin and end?

Our After-School Program is composed of all the clubs and activities that take place at Sandburg 2:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Friday are ACADEMIC ONLY

How can I find out what is offered after-school?

View our Club Descriptions page where you can find a listing and description of all of our clubs/activities as well as sponsors and meeting times/locations.

Is there transportation?

We do provide late buses on Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The buses will arrive between 4:30 p.m. and 4:55 p.m. to pick up students. Parents, please note that there are fewer buses for after-school activities, students may have to walk further than their regular routes.

Is there registration or a registration fee involved with the After-School Program?

Yes, complete this registration form prior to attending. There is NO registration fee to participate in most of the clubs/activities. In the few clubs that there is a fee involved, for supplies, it is kept to an absolute minimum.

I viewed the clubs/activities online, what is meant by “A Session and B Session”?

We have divided the After-School Program into two sessions to give our students the opportunity to participate in more than one club/activity. A Session- 2:20 p.m. 3:30 p.m. and B Session- 3:35 p.m. 4:30 p.m.

Can students participate in different clubs/activities every week?

Yes, students may use their after-school time as they would like or as needed. For example, students may choose to receive extra help from a teacher, attend a club or participate in an activity. We have found that students eventually find their niche and become loyal to the same clubs/activities as the year progresses.

Can my child stay after with a teacher and then come to after school?

Absolutely! All students staying after for a specific teacher may join any activity afterwards, provided they have a signed pass from that teacher!!

If my child was absent from school, are they allowed to come and participate after school?

No, they are not allowed to come into the building and participate.

What if my child was in AIA/In School Suspension, are they allowed to stay after school?

No, they cannot. All Carl Sandburg students must abide by all Fairfax County Public Schools, Students Rights & Responsibility always after school. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary actions, which can include the loss of all non-academic based after school program participation!

Students may be denied after school privileges if their conduct or behavior dictates.

I have another child who is not at Carl Sandburg Middle School, are they allowed to participate or ride the bus home with their sibling(s)?

Only Carl Sandburg’s students can participate in the after-school activities. Students who do not attend Sandburg will be considered as trespassing.

How do I sign up for the sports clubs?

Due to the large school population, there is a sign-up sheet during the lunch periods for soccer, weight lifting, and basketball. Students must come in and sign the sheet to participate that day.

What is the Extended Day Program?

This is another free program offered to our students whose parents/guardians are able to pick them up by 4:45 p.m.
