2021-22 ESSER III/School Innovation and Improvement Plan at a Glance

Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies


Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Tier 1

Reinforcement and Development of High Quality Instruction through Content Teams (CTs).

Tier 2

Targeted Intervention to support students who are not performing on grade level.

Tier 3

Additional support for students who are English Learners.

Additional support for students who are reading two or more levels below grade-level (and not already in a reading class).

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies


Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Tier 1

Extended support for identified subgroups through math workshop.

Leverage our Panther Time Intervention (40 minutes every other day) to target at maximum 15 specific students on each math teacher's roster.

Intensive small group after school intervention.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies


Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Provide professional development for teachers and support staff.

Accessing resources to SEL (wellness) materials.

Develop an outreach program for our Hispanic and English Language Learner students.

Provide opportunity for family engagement with increased focus on communicating with non-English speaking families and underrepresented families.

Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals.  These are shown below.

Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Goal Outcome

The enrollment in Algebra (or higher level) will increase to 50% of grade 8 students by Sept 2022.

Strategy 1 - Determining a focal group of students

  1. Math 7 teachers will identify students in Q1 who are currently taking Math 7 and have the potential to be enrolled in Algebra 1 the following year. Math 7 Honors teachers will identify students in Q1 who require support to successfully engage and pass in 7H and be ready for Algebra 1 the following year. 
  2. The student group will meet for Pre Algebra enrichment with a Math teacher during Panther Time in Q2, Q3, and Q4 (or as needed).
  3. Data following the progress of the group will be analyzed quarterly by the Math 7, Math 7H and the Algebra teams to support Algebra readiness.

Strategy 2 - Leveraging the Young Scholars Program for Access to Rigor

  1. Through the elementary transition process, school counselors will work with elementary feeder schools to help identify Young Scholars and encourage enrollment in honors coursework at the middle school level through the academic advising process; 
  2. 7th and 8th grade Young Scholars will be identified, celebrated as a cohort, and supported at CSMS through events and after school tutoring/programming. 
  3. Young Scholars with an interest and aptitude in mathematics will be provided supplemental enrichment during and/or after the school day to encourage high achievement and Algebra readiness.

End of Year SMARTR Goal Outcome

By the end of the 2021-2022 school year, all students at Sandburg Middle School will be able to identify one staff member as a trusted adult they can go to if they have a problem.

Strategy 1 - Professional development for teachers and support staff

  1. Teachers and support staff will actively engage in SEL (social and emotional learning)  professional development that will focus on developing strategies that will aid in enhancing current SEL practices. 
  2. Teachers and support staff will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to build on current SEL practices.
  3. Counselors will provide professional development opportunities to teachers around trauma informed practices through CT and staff meetings.

Strategy 2 - Leveraging the Young Scholars Program for access to rigor

  1. Advisory teachers will continue to  utilize the advisory calendar (located in the online Sandburg Handbook), to access guided SEL activities and resources 
  2. Support staff will share needs assessment data with advisory teachers to assess the level of emotional and academic support needed. 
  3. Students will be intentionally selected for Man to Man, Leadership Development, and DIVAS programs that build character and provide students with leadership opportunities.
  4. We will strengthen our existing programs (Young Scholars, AVID, & SGA) to elevate student voice and provide positive outlets for our students

Strategy 3 - Participation in a wellness screening program

  1. The student services department will deliver the Signs of Suicide program in the fall of 2021.
  2. Students who identify that they do not have a trusted adult at the school will be targeted for specific intervention and follow up, which could take the form of a targeted advisory class, small group counseling, pairing with an in school mentor.
