Another contribution to our positive school culture from our AVID site team! Students throughout the building participated in creative activities during the recent power outage. Mr. LaBue's homeroom class celebrates our diverse population with their diversity self-portraits. These students exemplify effective communicators and collaborators during this group activity. Ms. Marshall's class show they are goal-directed and resilient with these growth mindset challenges! Collaborative seating provides teachers with the opportunity to work with multiple students at once. These students play Heads-Up to learn vocabulary terms in Pre-Algebra. It's Escape Room Madness again in the library for 7th grade orientation! Ms. Jones and Ms. Foreman join forces to decorate the HPE display window. Students in Ms. Lutzker's class came up with some great descriptive terms in the "One Word Challenge". Energetic teachers and creative lessons add up to one great Math Team! Ms. Howe's classes participate in math workshops to learn percents, decimals, and fractions. Mr. Rangel's classes made posters exemplifying the tenets of Panther PRIDE! Ms. Larrick's classes are sharing personal attributes and building a sense of community. Ms. Thomas and Ms. Lopez are in action supporting and engaging our students! PE students participated in a scavenger hunt which introduced them to our Admin. Team and office staff. Mr. Terwilliger's students use Cheez-Its to solve math equations! Students in Ms. Niebuhr's class play States Bingo to learn where events occurred in history. Ms. DeLeon's classes use their creative and critical thinking skills during this STEM challenge. Students in Mr. Overbeck's classes honor the heroes of September 11th by thinking about how they want to be remembered. Sandburg teachers make students feel welcome and valued! Mr. Wilson encourages and inspires these students in the Man to Man leadership group. Our great transportation team safely transports our students to and from school! Our Science department has great chemistry! The Social Studies team knows their history! The HPE department is off and running to a great year! All of our English teachers have a story! The counselors have a solid learning target for their anti-bullying lessons in HPE classes. Students in HPE class use a mind mapping strategy to exhibit their understanding of the content. Our History teachers decide to showcase strong, brave women of the past on #WearYourFutureThursday! Our Literacy Team introduced writing strategies to support our schoolwide initiative of daily disciplinary writing. Our superhero lab ended with the students representing themselves as "superheroes". Congratulations to Ms. Anderson, our first Panther Pride winner of the school year! Congratulations to our September Pawsitivity Award Winners! Thank you to our supportive and generous PTA members who provided this nutritious snack during a recent PD. Sandburg AVID Students use a carousel activity to practice focused note-taking. We're excited to welcome this young man as a student advisor for our Get 2 Green initiative! Our music students are singing Ms. Martin's praises! Students study different types of primary sources including artifacts, documents, and oral histories in order to understand their importance to historians. Sandburg staff is excited to be reading this book, as part of our professional development plan. Sandburg Band teachers incorporate daily writing strategies into instruction. Ms. Dragan's Civics classes express tenets of good citizenship. Effective math instruction incorporates the use of “turn and talks”, collaborative learning, purposeful student discourse, and a smooth shift into student work time. Ms. Jones' homeroom class generated great ideas during this Positivity Project lesson. Students use Padlet to share what "stuck with them" after a library lesson! Ms. Lutzker used balloons in this activity to teach ordering fractions, decimals, percents, and scientific notation! Students in Ms. Niebuhr's class are in action brainstorming Reconstruction. Social Studies teachers picked "Refugee" for a department-wide reading selection. Mr. Rodriguez takes the time to connect with students by building relationships and providing support. Ms. Tourtellotte uses picture books to teach the elements of plot. One Sandburg student was so excited by their Geography unit that they created a map of the US featuring each state’s flag! These students are having academic conversations focused around author's viewpoint pictures. Math students participate in the classifying real numbers relay race! These students are engaged in reading thanks to Learning Ally! 7th grade English students perform skits about the different types of conflict! The AVID site team spreads inspiration throughout the building. It's College Day in the Music Department! Ms. Dragan's students use the Pebble Go Database to share information about their home countries. Congratulations to the winner of the "Science Ship" challenge in Mr. LaBue's class. Check out the new "flexible seating" in Ms. Lutzker's class! Ms. Marshall's classes explore the effects of paperclips on the dropping speed of paper helicopters. Student's in Ms. Moran's class are inspired by this motivation wall. Mr. Rice from West Potomac takes over the Sandburg Band! Mr. Overbeck's students create a travel brochure highlighting the wonders of the 7 regions of the United States. Mr. Rodriguez helps his students locate useful library resources during the QR Code Scavenger Hunt.
